This was the first Bloody Mary I ever developed. Instead of taking the traditional route by using my own recipe, I decided to use the feedback of hundreds of Bloody Mary connoisseurs from across the country. I would make a couple of recipes, try them out on bar customers and get their feedback. I kept a notebook with me jotting down their likes and dislikes, tweaking the recipe each week until all the negative feedback ceased. On a side note, when this was being developed, I always kept in mind that I wanted it to double as a marinade as well. The end result is a well-balanced Bloody Mary that is full of body and different layers of flavor.
Bloody Marys are made to be drank quickly. Not quickly as in chug the cocktail, but more along the lines of serving it in shorter glasses. All Bloody Marys will get diluted if they are sitting on ice for too long taking away their essence. We recommend glassware no larger than 14 oz. In addition to smaller glassware, too much alcohol sacrifices the integrity of flavor as well. 1 ½ oz. of alcohol to 4 oz. of mix is ideal. The Original mix is the perfect balance of sweet, salty, depth, and heat, but if you want to kick it up a notch, avoid the hot sauce and use cayenne pepper. Hot sauce will affect the flavor of the mix and change the way it hits the palate. Cayenne will keep the integrity of the drink and still provide that extra kick. Too many garnishes inhibit the Bloody Mary as well, so we suggest keeping it simple with a sprig of rosemary, cheddar cheese cube, and the ever popular bacon strip.
